Bio

Steve Daniels uses electronics and communication technologies to create hardware agents, kinetic sculptures, ubiquitous spaces and networked events. Through his practice he juxtaposes disparate knowledge systems and experiences in an effort to reveal their underlying structures and assumptions. His works and collaborations have exhibited at the TIFF Lightbox, Ontario Science Centre, InterAccess (Toronto, ON) and The Museum (Kitchener) and were recently included in the MACHines show at the Centre des Arts, Enghien Les Bain (FR), as a part of Eveil/Alive/Despertar (SESC Santana, Sao Paulo, Brazil), TEI'15 (Stanford, USA), ISEA (Disruption) 2015 (Vancouver, CAN), the Arts In Society Conference (Lisbon, Portugal, 2019) and ISEA 2020 - Why Sentience? (online).


Steve was the recipient of the InterAccess emerging artist award in 2003 and was hired by X-University shortly after graduating from OCAD in 2004. Steve is currently Associate Professor and past Director of the New Media program in the RTA School of Media, X-University. Steve teaches courses in Tangible Media, Digital Fabrication, Telepresence and Networked Objects. He is a founding faculty member of the New Media MakerSpace and host of weekly HackNights for New Media students. During COVID he has collaborated with faculty and staff from multiple institutions in Canada and the US to celebrate New Media practices during weekly online Nerd Nite International events.


He holds an MSc from the University of Manitoba (Zoology, Behavioural Ecology) and is a graduate of the Integrated Media program at OCAD (Toronto).
