Bio

Steve Daniels uses electronics and communication technologies to create hardware agents, kinetic sculptures, ubiquitous spaces and networked events. Through his practice he juxtaposes disparate knowledge systems and experiences in an effort to reveal their underlying structures and assumptions. His works and collaborations have exhibited locally at the TIFF Lightbox, Ontario Science Centre, InterAccess and The Museum (Kitchener). His work has also been included in the MACHines show at the Centre des Arts, Enghien Les Bain (FR), as a part of Eveil/Alive/Despertar (SESC Santana, Sao Paulo, Brazil), TEI'15 (Stanford, USA), the Arts In Society Conference (Lisbon, Portugal, 2019) and recent ISEAs: Disruption (2015,Vancouver, CAN), Why Sentience? (2020,Montreal, CAN, online), EveryWhen (2024, Brisbane, Australia).

Steve was the recipient of the InterAccess emerging artist award in 2003 and was hired by Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) shortly after graduating from OCAD in 2004. Steve is currently Associate Professor and past Director of the New Media program in the Creative School at TMU. Steve teaches courses grounded in Agency and Systems, Tangible Media, Digital Fabrication, Telepresence and Networked Objects. He is a founding faculty member of the New Media MakerSpace and host of weekly HackNights for the New Media community. During COVID he collaborated with faculty and staff from multiple institutions in Canada and the US to celebrate New Media practices at weekly online Nerd Nite International events. Since returning to face-to-face learning he has continued HackNight and created About Art, a series of student focussed art conversations, art crawls and related events.

He holds an MSc from the University of Manitoba (Zoology, Behavioural Ecology) and is a graduate of the Integrated Media program at OCADU (Toronto).
